4 Steps to Stay Cutting Edge – Guest Blogger Heather McMillan (@va_resource)

by SophieZo on August 14, 2010

As a virtual assistant, it’s important for you to remember that there are thousands of us out there. So you need to make sure you are on the cutting edge of all the most in demand skills out there in order to attract successful clients (you want successful clients so they pay you long-term!).

So here are four ways to help you keep a cutting edge on your VA business.

  1. Join a Virtual Assistant group or organization. Reading posts and emails from other VAs or listening at online summits or in person gatherings will help you learn what other VAs are doing. When you hear of something new, go to that software or service and try to sign up for a trial version. Play with it yourself during that trial period so you can learn the ins and outs of it.
  2. Listen to what other business owners and business support companies are saying on Twitter and Facebook. Often times they will be discussing the latest technology that can give a virtual assistant the cutting edge. Then you can go check taht software or service out for yourself.
  3. Take some time to browse other virtual assistants’ websites at least once every 30-45 days. See what services they are offering. If it’s something you never heard of, research it and get an idea of how in demand it is by searching Twitter and Facebook and blogs for it. Again, if it apepars to be in high demand, get a trial sign up or version of it that you can play with and test out for yourself.
  4. Read small business news articles and technology news articles on the major news network websites. I pick up a lot of stuff on CNN, Fox News, and the like by keeping up with those articles. Of course, many times they are behind a bit and I’m already aware of the technology the “new” articles are about. But there are times they are the first to jump on something that’s new and cutting edge.

Keeping yourself educated as to what businesses need and are doing today and trying to discern what they will need tomorrow is a great way to set yourself apart from your competition and attract more clients to your business!

Keep moving toward success!
