If you’re like me, having your papers and desk accessories all over the place can be very stressful. Maybe it’s my nature to be orderly (I am a Virgo, after all!), but I find that when everything is in its place, I can get my work done faster and with less stress.
It’s Not Hard to Get Organized
In a nutshell, it helps to be utterly ruthless with your things, no matter if it’s a piece of paper, an electronic document, or office supplies. If you don’t need it for taxes or financial planning, and if you haven’t used it in at least 6 months, you should get rid of it.
My mantra? When in doubt, throw it out!
Don’t go overboard – you certainly can’t recycle income and expense documents! But you can drastically minimize the amount of sheer stuff you have in your home office, if you are willing to be disciplined and focused on the tidy outcome.
- That stapler you don’t use? Donate it!
- Those emails from two years ago? Trash them!
- The handmade macaroni calendar your kid made 10 years ago that’s covered in a thick layer of grimy dust? … This one might seem like a tough call, but instead of keeping an ancient memento, make a new memory with your child by doing something meaningful together!
