You’ve worked hard to build your business. It’s taken lots of effort and LOTS of time, but you’ve turned your dream into a successful reality. Now you’re facing a brand new problem. The more successful you are, the more demands you face on your time. How do you do it all?
Here’s the secret: you don’t! For your business to continue to grow and thrive, you’re going to need to learn a very important skill – delegation. It can be hard to loosen the reins on a business you’ve built from the ground up, but you’ll be happier, less stressed, and more successful when you do. Here are a few tips to help you delegate like a boss!
1. Loosen Up!
In the beginning, every detail of your business was in your hands. Now that your company is growing, you can’t waste precious time on tasks that anyone could handle. Do you really need to read and respond to every email that crosses your desk? Probably not. So, get rid of that time-sucking task! Delegate that to a team member and free up your time for more important things.
2. Prioritize
A big part of successful delegation is knowing which tasks to hold on to and which ones to hand off. Start prioritizing those daily demands. If it’s something that requires a lot of skill and is essential to your business – keep it. If it doesn’t require a lot of skill but eats up a lot of time – that’s a task to delegate. Setting priorities makes it easy to decide what to keep and what to clear off your plate.
3. Know Your Team
It’s important to assign tasks to the best person for the job, even though it might be tempting to assign it to whomever has the lightest workload. Resist the temptation! One of your jobs as team leader is to know your team member’s strengths. Don’t just rely on what they’re good at now, keep an eye on their potential. When you see an aptitude for a particular task, encourage it! Consistently giving team members jobs that play to a skill that increases their aptitude and capability.
4. Trust Your Team
You wouldn’t hire people if you didn’t think you could count on them. Once you’ve delegated a task and given clear instructions and expectations for the finished product, trust your team to get the job done. Micromanaging won’t save you any time, and it won’t build confidence and trust with your team. Step back and let them do the job in the way that works best for them.
That being said, don’t be afraid to check in from time to time to make sure everything is running smoothly and on schedule!
Once you master the art of delegation, you’ll have more time to focus on the future of your business. We can make it even easier to build a reliable team that you can count on.
