Getting to Know Your Ideal Client

When you’re developing your marketing strategy, you should start with one very important question:

Who am I talking to?

A successful marketing message relies on in-depth knowledge of your ideal clients, who they are, what they need, and how your business can solve their problems. Creating a targeted marketing campaign that speaks directly to your audience becomes infinitely easier when you start by building your ideal client avatar (ICA).

An ICA isn’t just a brief, demographic overview of the type of clients you’re hoping to reach. It’s a detailed representation of your ideal customer that includes demographics like age, educational background and income level. It also includes a research-based psychographic profile that tells you more about your ICA’s values, beliefs, behaviors, and lifestyle. Your ICA will help you highlight important details about communication preferences, pain points, personal and professional goals, and the solutions they may be seeking to improve their businesses and lives.

You can clearly gain a lot of valuable insights from an ICA, but you might be wondering where to start! Here are 3 simple steps to help you create your ICA:

  1.     Research, Research, Research

Remember, an ICA is very detailed and that means you’re going to have to go beyond the basic age, gender, location stats. The more you know about your ideal clients, the better you’ll be able to tailor your message to their preferences, so learn as much as you can about who they are and what they do.

  1.     Find Their Motivation

You need to understand what motivates your ideal customers, what goals they’re working towards, and the challenges they’re facing. Of course, each customer will have unique needs and habits, but you can identify common traits that include your ICA’s interests, hobbies, values, lifestyle and behaviors.

  1.     Make It Personal

Your ICA should come alive on the page! Give them a name, persona, and backstory that makes them real and relatable. It’s much easier to create an authentic targeted message when you have a fully fleshed out ICA.

Creating an ICA establishes a strong foundation for your marketing efforts.  Your ICA will guide your messaging, create meaningful connections with your customers, and propel your growth and success!
